The easiest way to find the status of a state income tax return is to check online with the tax division of that state's official website. As of January, 2015, there are nine states in the United States that do not have a state tax.
When a person is expecting a state tax refund, it is understandable to be eager to know the status. Make the process as easy as possible by following just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Gather the pertinent information
Different states may require different information in order for a person to get a refund status. In general, one will need:
- Social security number
- Filing status such as single, married-filing jointly or head of household
- The exact amount of the refund due as shown on the tax form
Step 2: Contact the appropriate state tax agency
As of January, 2015, all states that have a state tax offer a way to check a state tax refund status online. That said, there may be times when the website is down, especially during times of high traffic. Sometimes it may be faster to contact the state income tax office via its toll-free number. The type of information required will, most likely, remain the same as was stated in Step 1. Be sure to wait a sufficient amount of time after filing the state taxes to check the refund status.
