The company operates around 100 stores under the Pathmark and Pathmark Sav-A-Center names in four states: Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The majority of stores are located in New Jersey and operate as so-called "super centers" that offer an expanded selection of merchandise, claims Hoover's. Most of the super centers have pharmacies and more than half have banks located on the premises.
Pathmark was founded in 1968. Its parent company at the time was Supermarkets General Corporation. It later became a subsidiary of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), which is based in Montvale, New Jersey and owns six supermarket divisions, according to Wikipedia. A&P closed 25 stores, including a number of Pathmark locations, in the fall of 2010 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection later that year citing over 3 billion dollars in debt.
