South Carolina has the largest percentage of mobile homes per number of housing units, according to the 2008 U.S. census. In that state, 17.9 percent of residences were mobile homes at the time of the census.
The state ranked number two for mobile homes in the 2008 census was New Mexico. Mobile homes are most common in the South. There is some correlation between states with the largest percentage of mobile homes and those with the highest poverty rates, but the correlation is not exact. In many cases, mobile home residents are employed full-time or are retired. In 2013, an estimated 20 million people in the United States lived in mobile homes.
