The Credit Union National Association is a nonprofit group that represents more than 7,000 individual credit unions across the United States. In cooperation with state credit-union leagues, it promotes the interests of credit unions in negotiations with federal regulatory agencies and Congress. Moreover, it acts as the voice of over 100 million credit union members nationwide. The group interacts with the media on behalf of credit unions and encourages grass-roots activities that promote credit-union membership. Additionally, the CUNA organizes conferences and training events for credit union leaders and staff in various locations each year.
The CUNA is governed by a volunteer board that is elected by peers in credit unions throughout the United States. In addition to its other activities, the group provides online training materials such as the Stop the Data Breaches toolkit, which includes a list of risk-management practices to help credit unions and their members avoid credit fraud. It also sponsors several awards, including the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award and the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award, both of which honor exceptional levels of community outreach on the part of member credit unions.
