As of 2014, the average salary for a professional softball player is between $5,000 and $6,000, according to the National Pro Fastpitch league. Training camp begins in mid-May; the regular season spans through June, July and August and is followed by league championship play.

As of 2014, the NPF league consists of four teams located in Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Florida. Each team plays 48 regular season games. Players are required to take up residence in the city for which they play, but the team provides accommodations. The NPF does not draft undergraduate college students in order to protect the athlete's college-playing eligibility and to comply with financial aid requirements.
