The information-services product line consists primarily of advisory newsletters written by F. Porter Stansberry and other financial editors. Stansberry Research is the largest independent investment newsletter publisher in the world as of 2015, with over 500,000 subscribers. Stansberry’s reports earn praise for their ability to capture the reader’s attention. Critics dismiss the reports as hype that lacks insight or meaningful analysis.
In 2004, the Securities and Exchange Commission sued Stansberry over an advisory in which readers paid $1,000 in exchange for the buy and sell dates of stock at the center of a secret deal between the United States and Russia. Stansberry promised investors could double their money overnight by adhering to his dates. Although the deal went through and the stock rose in value, it happened later than the dates Stansberry predicted and, instead of doubling their money as promised, investors suffered heavy losses. The SEC charged Stansberry with fraud, and the courts found Stansberry guilty and ordered him to pay $1.75 million to investors.Learn more about Corporations
