The Smart Serve Responsible Alcohol Training Program certifies workers in the hospitality industry in Ontario, Canada. Servers and establishments must have a Smart Serve permit in order to serve alcohol. The training and testing can be completed online or in-class.
The online certification is available for a fee, and training lasts around 3 to 4 hours. Participants must achieve a final test grade of 80 percent or higher to pass the course and obtain certification.
The enforcement of drinking and driving laws in Ontario has increased the level of responsibility for serving alcohol. The aim of Smart Serve is to maintain the balance between public safety, responsible alcohol service and customer loyalty.
