Silver is a better investment than gold because it is less expensive than gold, has greater production and has more earning potential, according to Ben Kramer-Miller of The Cheatsheet. Silver and gold are both smart investments because they're protected against inflation and economic disruption.
One ounce of gold is about 61.5 times more expensive than an ounce of silver, states The CheatSheet. The production of silver is nine times greater than gold. Most gold is hoarded, while half of silver production goes toward industrial production of many items, including modern electronic devices. When high operating costs cause silver companies to report losses, these companies have to cut back supply, which leads to an increase in the price of silver.
Silver is more alluring to small investors than gold because they can afford more of it, states The Cheatsheet. Silver is more volatile, so there is more potential to earn. Historically, silver was more practical than gold as money for daily purchases until silver coins were discontinued.
