When Should You Use a PDF Resume?

Use a PDF resume format only when the employer has indicated that they are willing to receive resumes in this format. Though PDF resumes offer several distinct advantages, as of 2015 many employers still prefer to receive resumes in Microsoft Word format.

One of the major advantages of PDF resumes is that they hold the resume's original format even if they pass through several different versions of a computer program. However, resumes in Microsoft Word tend to be easier for employers to search for keywords, so many prefer them. Employers often list a preferred resume format in the job posting or on the careers page of their websites. If no preference is indicated, a quick email or phone call can confirm whether PDF resumes are acceptable.
