What Is a Shift Leader?

A shift leader directs the activities and tasks of a work team during a shift in a production or retail environment. After assigning roles or tasks to each worker, the shift leader measures progress and communicates additional directions or feedback.

The shift leader is responsible for dealing with problems or customer complaints that arise during the shift. She also motivates employees and addresses any questions or concerns they have. Other responsibilities may include setting work team schedules, recording absences, setting up machines and equipment, cleaning and tearing down at the end of the shift, and interacting with top management about business plans.
