BC Hydro recommends registering online to manage a new account. After registering, customers can set up initial service through the BC Hydro online customer service portal by clicking New residential account and providing some basic identification and contact information, including a phone number and the address of the property where the new service is needed. Customers must also provide BC Hydro with their move-in date in order for power to be activated in a timely manner.

As of June 2015, BC Hydro charges a fee of $12.40 plus GST for setting up new accounts. Some customers may also be required to pay a security deposit in order to start new electrical service. Some reasons this may occur include a lack of credit history with BC Hydro, not performing a credit check or a credit check that indicates a deposit is required. BC Hydro may waive or reverse security deposit requirements for customers who request a credit check that returns favorable results or who can provide a letter of credit reference from another power company indicating 12 months of on-time bill payments.
