The most common establishments required to complete Serving It Right certification are businesses with food-primary licenses, such as restaurants; liquor-primary licences, such as bars, nightclubs and stadiums; and licensee retail store licences, such as liquor stores. Other businesses and staff that may require SIR certification are those with catering, special care and special occasion liquor licenses.

Certification is obtained by taking the SIR course, either online or through self-study, and passing the exam. Upon successful completion, SIR certificates are available to print immediately.
