The IRS has a customer service number where taxpayers can call in to obtain information regarding their own tax situation, explains the agency. There are a number of different phone numbers set up for individuals, businesses and exempt organizations to call in regarding their taxes. The phone numbers are located on the Telephone Assistance page of the IRS website, according to the IRS.

All of the numbers have IRS representatives on-hand to take calls from Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., taxpayers local time within the continental United States. The only exception is the hotline for exempt organizations, and those hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

When calling, taxpayers may ask questions to help them prepare their tax returns, or inquire about notices they have received. When the taxpayer has concluded their discussions, they are not able to return to their original responder when they want to access the system again. Wait times may be lengthy, says the IRS.
