In order to apply by mail, seniors should first visit the metropolitan transportation authority website. Here they can download the application form for their senior citizen reduced fare MetroCard. They should read the instructions carefully before completing the form. They have to enclose a 2 inch by 2 1/2 inch photograph of themselves. They should also enclose a photocopy of a document or identification card that proves their age. This could be a driver's license, a birth certificate or a Medicare card. They then mail the application to the metropolitan transportation authority offices in Brooklyn, New York.

Seniors may also apply in person by taking their application to a MetroCard bus or van or walking into a MetroCard customer service center. They should carry two valid forms of identification such as their birth certificate, Medicare card or driver's license. At least one of their identification documents should have their picture. The seniors can receive free photography services when they apply in person.

When applying for their MetroCard, senior citizens can choose the EasyPay automatic refill payment option. This means that they can link their debit or credit card to the reduced fare MetroCard so that it refills automatically while they use it.
