As of May 2105, donors schedule pickups with the Lupus Foundation through the organization's website or toll-free number. Contributions are collected for the Lupus America Household Goods Donation Program. The program is expanding, but, in early 2015, only a few locations were participating.
The Lupus America Household Goods Program gathers items and sells them to for-profit wholesale buyers. Most household items are accepted, such as clothing, tools, small appliances, house wares and bedding. Furniture and other large items are not accepted.
No matter what the weather is, donations should be placed outside the pickup spot by 7:30 a.m. on the scheduled day. Bags and boxes should have the identifying label "LF." Though the collection drivers distribute donation receipts, donors must indicate the value of their contributions. It is the responsibility of the donor to follow IRS guidelines for charitable offerings.
The Lupus Foundation is a non-profit fund-raising organization devoted to reducing diagnosis time for lupus, improving treatment options and increasing access to services. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that makes the body attack and destroy its own healthy tissue. This causes inflammation, pain and tissue damage. Lupus is characterized by periods of remission followed by flare ups, but effects vary greatly from mild to deadly.
