Founded in 1944, AMVETS received a congressional charter in 1947 signed by President Truman. AMVETS' mission is to support veterans and active military personnel by providing community services and advocating for veterans' causes such as continued federal funding for health care benefits, education and training assistance, and other entitlements. AMVETS is accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide free claims assistance to veterans, their dependents and survivors.

Membership in AMVETS is open only to persons actively serving in, or honorably discharged from, the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard or Reserves. Spouses and the children of active and honorably-discharged service members may join one of two AMVETS auxiliary organizations.
