The Trust was formed in 2007 as a result of a collective bargaining settlement designed to protect UAW workers from losing medical benefits when changes in the U.S. economy threatened the ability of the auto manufacturers to continue providing benefits. Retiree health insurance is not guaranteed by law, explains the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust.
Under the terms of the agreement negotiated by the UAW, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors each contributed to a separate tax-exempt fund for workers. The Trust manages the funds to provide insurance coverage. It became the largest nongovernmental purchaser of retiree health care when it launched in 2010, and although the 2009 financial crisis required cuts to the originally planned benefit structure, as of 2015, the Trust has succeeded in preserving retiree health insurance benefits, notes its website.Learn more about Health Insurance
