Retailers such as The Home Depot and Lowe's sell polymeric sand. Many home improvement and landscape stores that sell pavers also sell polymeric sand. It typically comes in 20-, 40- or 50-pound bags or tubs. Polymeric sand is made of fine sand mixed with silica and other additives, and it forms a strong binding agent when wet. It helps to lock together brick, concrete and stone pavers.
The Home Depot sells polymeric sand, such as Oldcastle's Sakrete PermaSand and TechniSoil's UltraMix Designer Series paver, which comes in colors of gray, charcoal, buff blends and oyster, as of November 2015. Sakrete PermaSand comes in 40-pound tubs, while UltraMix comes in 50-pound bags. The Home Depot has more than 2,000 locations across the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and it is the country's largest home improvement retailer. It also operates in Canada and Mexico.
Lowe's sells Sakrete polymeric jointing and Laticrete jointing and polymeric sand in 40-pound tubs, in colors of gray and tan. Lowe's Companies, Inc. is second in size to The Home Depot, and it operates more than 1,800 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia.
Using polymeric sand to fill the joints between pavers provides several advantages over simply using sand. Polymeric sand improves the durability of the installation by making a less permeable seal that reduces the amount of water seeping into the paving foundation. Unlike sand, polymeric sand does not wash out in a rain and deters the growth of weeds and colonization by ants.
