The minimum requirements to become an architectural drafter are completion of an Associate's degree in architectural drafting or architectural design and proficiency with design software. An American Design Drafting Association certification and mathematics skills are also advantageous.
An Associate's degree in architectural drafting or design teaches many of the skills needed to become an architectural drafter, such as engineering principles, physics, properties of various materials and construction techniques. Proficiency with computer-aided design, building information modelling and product data management software is also essential.
The American Design Drafting Association offers awards to applicants who successfully pass their examination. American Design Drafting Association certification is not compulsory but serves as an advantage when starting a career in architectural drafting. Mathematical skills and engineering experience are also a bonus.
