Meals on Wheels America, formerly Meals on Wheels Association of America, is the oldest and largest senior nutrition program. The national organization supports over 5,000 local programs across the country, which encompasses a volunteer base of over 2 million individuals. The organization seeks to address hunger issues among senior citizens struggling with hunger and isolation.
Inspired by the Ethiopian Famine, siblings Billy and Debbie Shore founded Share our Strength in Washington, D.C., in 1984. Today, Share our Strength focuses on meeting the needs of hungry children. To accomplish this, Share our Strength deploys a number of programs, including educational resources and support for related organizations. The organization primarily focuses on connecting individuals with resources either through local businesses or government agencies. In addition to meeting nutritional needs, Share our Strength endeavours to also provide nutritional education to those in need.
John van Hengel founded America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network in 1979, which changed its name to Feeding America in 2008. As opposed to the educational and administrative agendas of Meals on Wheels or Share our Strength, Feeding America focuses primarily on organizing and maintaining food banks across the nation.
