Recycling centers that accept Styrofoam items include GreenCitizen, Earth Friendly Building Materials, Alpha Ridge Convenient Center and Styro Recycle. Some of these companies place restrictions on Styrofoam recycling, such as limiting recycling to certain Styrofoam items or requiring that such items be clean or unused when they are dropped off.
As of 2015, GreenCitizen has five Bay Area Eco-centers in San Francisco, Berkeley, Burlingame, Mountain View, and Santa Clara. Customers who drop off Styrofoam have to pay a $5 per 30 gallon bag fee (though packaging peanuts are free), and GreenCitizen only accepts Styrofoam that is white, is unmarked and has not been used for food. The organization also offers office recyclables pickup.
Earth Friendly Building Material provides Styrofoam recycling in Arizona, and includes Arizona State University, Mesa Community College and Maricopa County on its list of clients. The company has a drop-off bin which individuals can make use of 24/7. Emmanuel United Methodist Community has volunteers that collect Styrofoam materials on a quarterly basis in January, April, July and October and who drop the items off at Alpha Ridge Convenient Center. Only clean items are available for collection.
Requirements for Styrofoam recycling with Styro Recycle include clean, dry material and the removal of all packaging tape.
