RadioShack announced the closing of about half of its company-owned stores in 2015 as the result of the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Sprint is taking over many of the remaining stores to sell mobile devices, plans and RadioShack products and services. About 1,000 independently owned RadioShack stores remain open.
RadioShack, which opened in1921 to sell marine radio equipment, is named for the small rooms where sailors send and receive messages. The company expanded into consumer sales in the 1940s with stereo equipment and started selling video games in the 1980s. In recent years, RadioShack struggled to compete with online sellers and large retail chains offering deep discounts.
