Qualifications for security guards include vigilance, attention to detail, conflict resolution, quick response, physical dexterity and good judgment. A high school diploma is preferred but not required. Beneficial skills for a good security guard are surveillance skills and knowledge of alarm systems, first aid, firearms and writing reports, but employers often provide training on these to new security guards.
A security guard's job, whether part-time or full-time, is to protect a facility and the people and things in it and to prevent illegal activities, such as theft, vandalism or violence. Job duties may include checking IDs at the door to a building or high-security area, patrolling the premises, watching security cameras and setting alarms and other building controls. Security guards work in office buildings, hospitals, schools, casinos and shopping malls.
