To become a paleontologist, a college background that is focused heavily on the sciences and a major in geology or biology is recommended. Additionally, while in school, it is imperative to seek volunteer opportunities, internships or independent studies with a professional paleontologist or museum.
In general, universities should cater to this area of study by providing their students with opportunities to pursue in order to prepare for a launch into the career. A Masters in Science or PhD in paleontology is also required of those who are serious about pursuing the field. The specialty should be decided when entering the Masters program.
