What Does a Psychologist Do?

Psychologists fulfill numerous roles, all of which focus on understanding brain functioning and behavior. Clinical and counseling psychology are two of the most identifiable careers in psychology. Both clinical and counseling psychologists talk to patients in order to diagnose possible mental illnesses and identify ideal treatments.

Industries that are largely affected by human behavior, including businesses, schools and the military, employ psychologists to improve institutional decision making. Research is central to psychology, so careers in this field are often research-intensive. Psychiatrists are often confused with clinical psychologists; however, psychiatrists typically prescribe medications to address mental health concerns, whereas clinical psychologists do not.
