The Providian Visa credit card is no longer available. Washington Mutual acquired Providian in 2005, and the bank officially closed in 2007, according to the National Information Center.
Prior to its sale and closure, Providian was the sixth largest U.S. credit card bank with more than 13 million cardholders, explains Consumer Affairs. Even so, it was subject to enforcement and litigation. In 2000, the bank agreed to pay at least $300 million in restitution to its customers along with a $5.5 million fine to the City of San Francisco for engaging in unfair and deceptive practices. In 2001, Providian agreed to pay $105 million to settle a class action brought by cardholders over its marketing and billing practices, states Girard Gibbs LLP.
