Nursing professional development is defined as a specialty-based activity that is based on current health care technologies and the nursing sciences. Nursing professional development specialists are also called clinical nurse educators.
NPD specialists address and manage professional development for nursing students in the areas of continuing education, certification and licensure requirements. NPD specialists also influence the practice environments in a variety of health care settings as well as direct programs in research and nursing education. NPD professionals are involved in cybergogy, or technological learning in the nursing field.
The Illinois Center for Advanced Practice Learning says that continuing education has enabled the registered nurse to take on a more autonomous and responsible professional role. Advanced practice nurses are credentialed as Certified Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Clinical Nurse Specialists. APNs must obtain an MS or doctorate in nursing and be board certified.
