Form 1099-MISC, or Miscellaneous Income form, is used when service payments are made to a person who is not an employee, explains the IRS. Other types of reportable income include rents exceeding the amount of $600, prizes and award money, and payments made to an attorney. These transactions are reported to the IRS, as well as to the person who received the payments.
The Internal Revenue Service Web page containing Form 1099-MISC includes two color-coded copies. The red copy, labeled Copy A, is for informational purposes only, and should not be filed with the IRS, since it can not be scanned, states the IRS. If the Payer prints and files the online version of Copy A , the Internal Revenue Service may choose to impose a fine. Payers must order Copy A directly from the IRS, or file their return electronically. The copy in black, labeled Copy B, is designated for the recipient of funds, or payee. The online version meets the informational provision requirements of the IRS, and should be mailed out to the recipient.Learn more about Taxes
