At an associate degree level, training is offered either offline or in a hybrid format combining offline and online training. This is to enable students to obtain hands-on experience. An associate degree is part of the admission criteria for bachelor's and master's dental hygiene programs.
As of March 2015, there are 45 dental hygiene programs conducted through partial to full online instruction, according to the American Dental Hygienists' Association. Some examples of schools offering partially online dental hygiene degree programs are the University of Maryland, Ohio State University and Youngstown State University.
