Peoples Gas is a regulated natural gas utility that currently delivers natural gas to approximately 831,000 individual customers and businesses in the Chicago area. The company has been in business since 1850 when it sent workers to light the natural gas lamps on the streets of Chicago, making Peoples Gas the city's first utility. In addition to providing natural gas to the people of Chicago, this company also strives to educate the community about social responsibility as well as energy safety and efficiency, notes Peoples Gas.
Peoples Gas employs roughly 1,300 people who work together to provide natural gas from the company-owned natural gas pipeline system that runs underground from Manlove Field to Chicago. A natural gas distribution main 4,300 miles long and a 270-mile natural gas transmission main are included in the company's facilities, notes Peoples Gas.
Peoples Gas was awarded the Heroes Award from the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation, a certification of appreciation from the Federation of Women Contractors, the George Javaras Corporate Award from the Chicago Metro History Education Center, the Industrial Achievement Award from the Illinois Association of Water Pollution Control Operators and the Corporate Citizenship Award from Envision Unlimited in 2014.
