Order fulfillment is the business process that takes place between receipt of a customer order and final delivery on that order. In some retail settings, order fulfillment is relatively fast, as customers select products, present them at a point-of-sale terminal, make payment and take the items home.
In other settings, order fulfillment is a more elaborate process. When customers place orders online, for instance, the seller often has to pull the items from inventory, package them for shipment and transport them for final delivery to the customer. For made-to-order or custom-design purchases, the order fulfillment process is often much longer due to the time involved in creating and then shipping the products.
