The U.S. Census Bureau's Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division provides a table showing the median home values for each state from the 1940s to 2000. The Historical Census of Housing tables also display the value of single-family homes in the United States before and after adjusting for inflation.
Standard & Poor's Case-Shiller index shows a house-price index of 20 cities from 1987 to 2013. Aside from the rate of the house-price inflation, the interactive guide on The Economist site also compares the data against median housing rent, household income, and the prices and percentage change in real terms. The guide also allows comparison of data between two cities.
