American consumers are entitled to a free credit report every 12 months as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The act tasks three nationwide credit reporting companies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, to provide consumers their credit report upon their request. The free credit reports may include information about how a consumer pays his bills, where he lives or if he has ever filed for bankruptcy, according to FTC.gov. The FTC is the enforcing agency of the FCRA.
