Full Answer

American consumers are entitled to a free credit report every 12 months as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The act tasks three nationwide credit reporting companies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, to provide consumers their credit report upon their request. The free credit reports may include information about how a consumer pays his bills, where he lives or if he has ever filed for bankruptcy, according to FTC.gov. The FTC is the enforcing agency of the FCRA.

The following shows the basic steps in requesting for a free credit report.

  1. Go to the website
  2. Type www.annualcreditreport.com on the browser and press Enter. The annualcreditreport.com site is the only authorized website to accept and process requests for a free credit report.

  3. Navigate to the request page
  4. Select and click on the "Select yours now!" button on the menu on the upper portion of the page.

  5. Fill out the request form and send
  6. Once on the request page, click on the "Request your credit reports" button on the page. Fill out the online request form and submit it.
