The Internal Revenue Service offers free copies of tax returns to victims of natural disasters who need these returns to apply for benefits or to claim losses related to the disaster, states the IRS. TurboTax also offers free copies to specific former customers who filed with them, confirms TurboTax.
People affected by a disaster can call the IRS Disaster Assistance Hotline at 1-866-562-5227 for additional information. They expedite free copies of the needed tax returns to people who qualify, states the IRS.
For people who only need the information contained on their tax return, and do not require an exact copy, the IRS offers free tax transcripts. Most student loan lenders, mortgage lenders, and the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services accept these tax transcripts instead of a copy of the return, according to the IRS. Taxpayers can request these transcripts online or by mail.
As of June 2015, TurboTax clients can view and print copies of their past returns filed with the company until Oct. 16, 2016, if they used the online service and paid for the PLUS upgrade or the prep fee for the Home and Business, Deluxe, or Premier versions in 2014. If customers continue to pay for these premium versions of TurboTax, they continue to have access to their prior tax returns, confirms TurboTax.
