Medicare Part B covers Nu-Hope ostomy belts as medically necessary ostomy supplies when a physician says a patient's condition demands their use, explains Medicare.gov. As of June 2015, Maryland, Connecticut and New York require insurance carriers to cover ostomy supplies, reports the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society.
Medicare covers ostomy supplies as prosthetic devices. A patient pays 20 percent of the amount Medicare approves for supplies and the physician's services, and the deductible under Part B applies, notes Medicare.gov.
On April 14, 2015, Governor Larry Hogan signed the Maryland bill, which states that medical, hospital or surgical insurance benefits must cover all medically necessary and appropriate equipment and supplies for treating ostomies. The Maryland law excludes plans that the state health exchange offers, reports the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society.
