NSTAR was founded in 1999, following the merger of BEC Energy and Commonwealth Energy System. In 2002, NSTAR sold its interests in the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant to the FPL group. In October 2010, NSTAR Electric Company announced a merger with Northeast Utilities.

The merger took place in 2012, and in 2015, Northeast Utilities and all its subsidiaries, including NSTAR, re-branded themselves as Eversource Energy, which is a publicly traded, Fortune 500 energy company headquartered in Boston and Hartford, Connecticut. Eversource Energy has numerous regulated subsidiaries that provide retail natural gas and electric service to more than 3.6 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut, as of 2015.
