Two vendors offering network operating system certifications are Microsoft and Novell, and some sample certifications are Novell Certified Engineer, Certified Novel Administrator, SUSE Certified Linux Professional, Certified Novell Engineer, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate and Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert. Earning any of these certifications requires passing one or more exams about the vendor's network operating system, notes Microsoft and Novell. Preparation courses are available but optional.
Both Microsoft's and Novell's certifications vary by skill level and skills tested. For example, the Novell Certified Administrator credential is for those with general server administration skills, while the Certified Novell Engineer credential requires more advanced skills in this area. As of 2015, Microsoft offers entry-, associate- and expert-level credentials. Its entry-level Microsoft Technology Associate certification requires information technology infrastructure expertise while its expert-level Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert certification requires both server and desktop infrastructure expertise, notes Microsoft's website.
