Do You Need a Federal Identification Number to Work in the United States?

An individual taxpayer identification number is not required for a nonresident alien to work in the United States. The sole intended purpose of the individual taxpayer identification number is for a nonresident alien who does not qualify for a Social Security number to file a federal tax return.

Some nonresident aliens must file federal returns in order to pay federal income taxes, and they need to obtain individual taxpayer identification numbers to do so. Many nonresident aliens fail to earn wages high enough to require them to file federal tax returns, and they do not need to obtain individual taxpayer identification numbers.

Although obtaining individual taxpayer identification numbers is optional for low-income, nonresident alien workers, many apply as this is a widely accepted form of identification across federal, state and local governments.
