The most prominent payroll management programs include ADP, Paychex and QuickBooks. ADP and Paychex handle payroll for their clients in exchange for a monthly fee, while QuickBooks allows users to electronically manage payroll themselves in exchange for a cheaper fee.
The benefit to using ADP or Paychex is that the company processes everything from payroll and taxes to issuing W2s and 1099s. Most payroll companies also offer guarantees that protect small businesses in the event they make errors on taxes. With QuickBooks, owners manually enter payroll information into the system, and the program processes direct deposit, but the small business owner is responsible for his or her own taxes and end of year documents.
