Nabisco got its start in the late 19th century as the National Biscuit Company. It was the result of a merger between the American Biscuit Company, the New York Biscuit Company, and the United States Baking Company. "Nabisco" became a popular nickname during the company's early years. The company adopted this abbreviation in 1941, but it wasn't until 1971 that "Nabisco" was made the official corporate name.
The Nabisco company was run by Adolphus Green, a Chicago lawyer, during its first twenty years. Green standardized the recipes and packaging of crackers across all of Nabisco's bakeries. Until Nabisco, crackers were sold in bulk.
According to encyclopedia.com, Nabisco's success was due to an unprecedented advertising campaign costing $7 millionat that time. An advertising agency based in Philadelphia gave the original Nabisco cracker the catchy name of "Uneeda Biscuit." By 1900, Nabisco had sold over 100 million packages of crackers.
As of 2015, the Nabisco Foods Group includes Nabisco Biscuit Co., Nabisco Brands Ltd. (Canada), Nabisco International Incorporated, Fleischmann's Division, LifeSavers Division, Planters Division, and Specialty Products Division, manufacturing a total of approximately 14,000 products.Learn more about Corporations
