Jim Mullen founded Mullen Advertising in 1970 with Paul Silverman as creative director and Joe Grimaldi as chief operating officer. Since then Mullen Advertising has steadily grown in size and as of 2015 operates as the 22nd largest ad agency in the United States, while employing over 6,400 staffers. Mullen Advertising offers a wide variety of advertising and marketing services, including but not limited to direct marketing, brand planning, marketing to women, and creative design.
Some notable clients of Mullen Advertising include Google, General Motors, U.S. Cellular, JetBlue and the National Geographic Channel. The "When I Grow Up" Super Bowl commercial for Monster Worldwide Incorporated stands as one of Mullen Advertising's most memorable and critically-acclaimed productions. In recognition for innovative and outstanding performance in the field of marketing, Mullen Advertising has received accolades from Ad Age every year since 2011. In 2011, Fast Company also granted Mullen Advertising the "Most Innovative Company" award. Other organizations that have recognized Mullen Advertising for exceptional innovation or service within the last decade include Forbes, MediaPost, OMMA and Adweek.
Currently, Mullen Advertising maintains a headquarters in Boston along with secondary offices in Detroit, Pittsburgh and Winston-Salem. In 2012, Mullen Advertising also announced plans to open a new office in San Francisco.
