It is free to obtain an Individual Tax Identification Number, or ITIN, from the United States government. An ITIN can be used in place of a Social Security Number, or SSN, when an SSN is not applicable.
ITINs serve numerous purposes in the tax world and can be obtained free of charge by any individual or qualifying entity. ITINs are used primarily by those who are not United States citizens, small businesses, trusts and estates. In order to apply for an ITIN, a taxpayer must file Form W-7 with the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
