The average annual salary of a barber, as of Sept. 2014, is $28,833. Ten percent of barbers only make about $18,000 per year, while another 10 percent make $40,000 or more.
Most barbers do not get bonuses. However, some do receive benefits, such as health care coverage and paid time off. Often, barbers are supervised, though some work for themselves while owning their own shop. Typically, a person needs several years of experience cutting hair to be barber. For education, usually a high school diploma is sufficient, though a degree from a beauty school is helpful. In some places, a barber's license is required as well.
