Mount Pleasant Cemetery is located at 375 Broadway in Newark, NJ. Mount Pleasant is Newark's oldest cemetery, established in 1843 by jewelry maker, Horace Baldwin.
The Mount Pleasant Cemetery is surrounded by large Victorian gates and home to many exquisite monuments along the Passaic River. It is also registered in the National Register of Historic Places since 1988 as a historic site due to its design and those that have been buried there.
Mount Pleasant hosts monthly public docent tours to explore the 40-acre site and share stories of its residents. Some notable names of those buried inside the Mount Pleasant Cemetery are Seth Boyden, the inventor of patent leather; writer Amanda Minnie Douglas and even the owner of Patterson & Ballantine Brewing Company, Peter Ballantine.
