A merchandising coordinator plans, directs and manages the purchase of finished goods for later resale in a retail store or a chain of retail stores. Merchandising coordinators are also known as merchandise managers, purchasing managers and procurement officers.

Merchandising coordinators typically participate in formulating a retail strategy along with other operational planning staff. These professionals then carry out the strategy by identifying suppliers and manufacturers who can supply the goods to match the retail strategy. Merchandising coordinators typically oversee a staff of purchasing agents. Merchandising coordinators must have strong professional skills in contract negotiation, contract administration and contract writing, as they are usually in charge of carrying out negotiations with potential suppliers.
