In 1958, John Menard Jr. founded his company as a pole building business as low-cost agricultural buildings were in demand at the time. After graduating from college in 1959, Menard purchased a small piece of land in Eau Claire for an office and shop location. Thereafter, Menards expanded its business by selling lumber and building materials to consumers. In 1994, Menards sold off its building division, ending the construction of pole barns under the Menard name and retaining only the retail store locations.
