Are Medicare Part A and B Provided Free of Charge to Qualifying Individuals?

Medicare Part A is provided free of charge to qualifying individuals, but Part B costs a minimum of $104.90 per month as of 2015. Participants of any age are eligible as long as they meet medical and employment conditions.

People age 65 or older can get Part A benefits if they had Medicare-covered employment or if they receive or are eligible to receive retirement benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board or Social Security.

People younger than 65 can receive Part A benefits if they have end-stage renal disease and meet certain conditions or if they have received at least 24 months of disability benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board or Social Security.
