A medical transcriptionist is a person who listens to recorded physicians' notes and transcribes them into written documents. These documents include written reports used for internal purposes as well as for meeting legal and ethical standards for patient medical records.
Some transcriptionists work in the offices of medical practitioners. Others work for third-party service firms that provide transcription for many clients. Knowledge of medical terminology and excellent listening skills are critical for this job, as the person must recognize language used in notes recorded by the doctor. Medical transcriptionists review documents for accuracy and follow up with medical providers to ensure the accuracy of their work.
