Dental benefits became available again under Medi-Cal on May 1, 2014. Dental coverage for adults 21 years of age and older had been cut from Medi-Cal in 2009 due to budget shortfalls, although children continued to receive coverage.
Medi-Cal’s renewed coverage includes many preventive and restorative procedures, including routine exams, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, root canals, crowns, dentures and other necessary dental services. However, there are limits on coverage that previously existed, such as extractions, root canals and partial dentures and implants. Medi-Cal is a California state insurance program that provides health benefits to poor and low-income individuals, including doctor visits, hospital care, immunization, pregnancy-related services and nursing home care.
