A mechanic is most often a trained service professional who inspects, maintains and repairs cars and light trucks. A licensed mechanic may specialize in a number of other fields.

The term mechanic is most often used to describe the service professionals and technical staff members who perform diagnoses and repair of automobiles, sports utility vehicles, consumer and commercial trucks and in certain areas, heavy equipment. Mechanics also specialize in equipment maintenance and repair in various other industries such as motorcycle, air conditioning, aircraft, tank and military vehicle service.

In the automotive industry, mechanics are required to hold at minimum a high school diploma. Some employers require additional certifications as vehicles and equipment become more specialized.
